A walk across the road to the East Regional Park frequently results in an encounter with a heron. There are at least two in residence, but I only see one at a time.
He, she?, stood perfectly still for about 20 minutes after I showed up, and had probably been there quite a while. Oblivious to the ducks on the pond, and the kids across the way yelling at their dog.
Once the dog got close enough though, ducks and heron startled and took off. He looks and sounds ancient and dinosaur-like on those huge blue wings.
